Lucy Hartfield writes romance for readers who love sharp banter, soft hearts, and a happily ever after that feels earned. Her stories follow imperfect people who are very good at taking care of everyone else, and the love stories that finally ask them to let someone take care of them. Her debut, an opposites-attract rom-com set in the world of weddings, is on its way.

A reader first

I've been a reader since I was a little kid. If you remember the Accelerated Reader program from elementary school, it basically fueled my reading life. I loved watching my points pile up with every book I finished, and I've been chasing that feeling of turning the last page ever since.

Why I write

By day, I plan events for a living, and I love the parallels between building the emotional experience of an event and building the emotional experience of a book. Both have an opening, a middle, and an ending. And both bring people together in a way that's truly like nothing else.

What drives me

I truly believe our world needs more community and connection, and shared experiences are the best way to build them. Whether it's planning the wedding of the year like Lila does in my book, or talking about a story together in a book club, collective memories help us build a network with each other that can truly change the world. They've certainly already changed mine.

A few fun facts

• My coffee order changes with the seasons: a pumpkin spice latte in the fall, a peppermint mocha in the winter, and a vanilla matcha latte in the summer. A strawberry banana protein smoothie is never a bad option either (Lila and I have that in common).
• I'm a gardener in progress. This year I started tomatoes and peppers from seed, and then they all died. So my newest pursuit is figuring out how to make seedlings survive a Minnesota spring.
• Reading, of course, is still my favorite way to spend an evening.
